Group pre-production post

 27th January 2021

In today's lesson my production group was set aside to discuss any changes we wanted to make to our opening sequence after receiving feedback from both Matt and Becky. We were told that some of the bits we wanted to add to are opening sequence may be seen as cliche, as there are many horror/thriller movies that have many kidnap and crossing out picture elements. So when we met up together as a group and further discussed what to take out of our opening scene so that we could make it seem more like an opening sequence rather than giving away too much of the movie plot and we were careful in going over what areas we wanted to change and what areas we wanted to keep so that it wouldn't completely change our story. We have now changed the beginning of our story so that we will see A character who has already been kidnapped/tortured by the antagonist and then possibly being thrown out as she is now "Worn"/"used". Then we go back to main focus of the story which would be the doll house.

Film Technology

 Film technology

 CGI

  • At the most basic level, Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) is the creation of still or animated visual content with computer software. CGI most commonly refers to the 3D computer graphics used to create characters, scenes and special effects in films, television and games. The technology is also used in everything from advertising, architecture, engineering, virtual reality and even art.

  • CGI is used extensively these days because it is often cheaper than physical methods which rely on creating elaborate miniatures, hiring extras for crowd scenes, and most commonly for when it's simply not safe or humanly possible to create the visuals

  • CGI is created using a range of different methods. The use of algorithms can produce complex fractal patterns. 2D pixel-based image editors can create vector shapes. 3D graphics software can create everything for simple primitive shapes to complex forms made from flat triangles and quadrangles. 3D software can even simulate the way light reacts to a surface and generate particle effects.

70mm

  • An anamorphic squeeze combined with 65 mm film allowed for extremely wide aspect ratios to be used while still preserving quality. This was used in incredible success in the 1959 film Ben-Hur and the 2015 film The Hateful Eight, both of which were filmed with the Ultra Panavision 70/MGM Camera 65 process at an aspect ratio of 2.76:1. It required the use of a 1.25x anamorphic lens to horizontally compress the image, and a corresponding lens on the projector to uncompressed it.

  • Limited use of 65 mm film was revived in the late 1970s for some of the visual effect’s sequences in films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, mainly because the larger negative did a better job than 35 mm negative of minimizing visible film grain during optical compositing.

  IMAX

  • The screen is 4500 times bigger than an average TV screen.

  • The film is strong enough to pull a truck.

  • A 2D IMAX camera weighs approximately 80 pounds. That means if wildlife shows up, you can’t grab a camera and follow it as you can with video or 16mm. The 3D IMAX camera is the size of a hotel mini-bar refrigerator and weighs 265 pounds.

  • Light from the 15,000-watt lamp in an IMAX projector is so bright that if it were on the moon we could see it from earth with the naked eye.

  • If a large log were held in front of the light beam from the projector, it would spontaneously combust.

  • The l5/70 film frame used by the IMAX projection system is 10 times the size of a conventional 35mm frame.

  • Sonics Proportional Point Source (PPS) loudspeaker system was specifically designed for IMAX theatres. The system typically uses 44 laser focused speaker drivers located throughout the theater to fully envelope the audience.

Adams Film Titles

Examples of film title

Delicatessen-1991

-Low-key lighting. Denotes a sense of despair and dystopia.

Representation

-Chef in dirty clothing manically murders man in garbage bin. Movie title appears along with a swinging pig in shadows. Main theme of the movie is clear-flesh and slash, showing the purpose and overall theme of the film.

-Disgusting severed hand and discarded rubbish littering whole area. What seems to be an office. Everything in the mise-en-scene is dirty or rusty. Post-apocalyptic.

The man who has wrapped himself in garbage seems to be very fearful for his life as he is frantically shaking which indicates something bad is about to happen to him.

The man in the garbage can also be a dark comedic character as the faces and body gestures he makes does not indicate of a man who is most likely going to be killed.

We cannot tell much about the characters personalities in this opening sequence as there is no dialogue between the characters, but the chef seems to be slightly sadistic and over joyed as he is about to clam his knife down in the man planning to escape through the garbage.

Camera

-There is an establishing shot of the low lighted dark dystopian area with several demolished buildings indicating that this is based in a dark future where people are struggling to live properly.

-Camera pans along the area, stopping to show the names of crew and actors. Positioned in various places. Restaurant bills embroidered in caps and printed in dirty sheets.

Low-key lighting. Denotes a sense of despair and dystopia.

Narrative

-The story follows a dark future where humans must murder and eat other humans to survive, it also includes a dark twisted sense of humour as we see when the man in the garbage bin gets murdered by the maniacal chef.

Enigma codes in the beginning could have been

·       Who was the man wrapped in garbage?

·       Why was he hiding

·       What will happen if he is caught

·       Why is he wrapped in garbage?

Sound

-Non-diegetic sound: an accordion playing a seemingly melancholic but mostly a soft tune to accompany the eeriness of the whole mise-en-scene.

-Last image on the sequence is a diagram of the edible sections of a pig. Denoting the need for flesh in this new world.

-Although not much of the movie plot can be noticed, it is sure to be a dark film verging on the gore. The use of shadows and colours for the sequence denotes so.

Genre

-I believe the movie is a cross between horror, thriller and comedy you can tell as there is a mix of these elements throughout the opening scene such as the section where the man tries to escape by encasing himself in rubbish only to get caught by making noise this is a clear comedic element.

Extension

The logo of Delicatessen is a cooked pig swinging into the light with a black back drop adding very dramatic lighting on the logo this again ties to the theme of the movie having to do with food and the shortage leading to cannibalism

Film opening sequence analysis: Kick Ass

 Analysis of Kick Ass

character: Kick Ass

Adjectives: relaxed

Miss-En-Scene evidence:

He was willing to throw himself at the bad guys knowing he could die

Camera evidence:

there is an over the shoulder shot of him charging at the bad guys showing he is a bit scared.

Sound evidence:

The music is energy inducing and very fast paced matching kick asses energy and bravery.

Character: Kick Ass

Adjective: Stupid

Miss-En-Scene evidence:

His costume is quite childish and not very practical

Camera Evidence:

There were many medium shots and close ups to show his suit and how it isn't made very well

Sound Evidence:

"I am willing to die" this can be seen as stupid as he's willing to die for someone he's never met before

 Wednesday 13th January 2021

In today's lesson we further expanded upon what are are pitches should be like for our first idea. After a short talk with the whole class we were split into our production groups to talk amongst ourselves about which idea we wanted to keep and how we would create it using what we have access to such as locations, props, etc. In my group we decided to go with our strongest idea which we had discussed in most detail original idea where we see an old lady and a few blonde haired girls who look  very similar and the audience has to guess whether they were kidnapped or doing this out of their own motivation.

 Monday 11th 2021

We have begun online learning for all subjects, today we discussed the structure for the rest of the week and how everything will work if we are able to go back to school on the expected February half term. We have been told that we have to do individual pitches for opening sequence ideas on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
